South Bronx Culture Festival 2026

Dream Big, Stay Rooted

South Bronx Culture Festival  2026: Dream Big, Stay Rooted

May 29-30, 2026

Come Dream With Us!

Headliners

Bronx Banda with Arturo O’Farrill & The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra

The Mambo Legends Orchestra

Since 2011, Casita Maria’s South Bronx Culture Festival (SBCF) has celebrated the vibrant cultures of the community through this free annual event anchored by a new theme each year. Our 2026 theme, Dream Big, Stay Rooted, is a call to action to aim for the stars while honoring and staying grounded in your heritage. To amplify this message, the Festival line-up includes music, art and dance forms from homegrown Latin Jazz, Mambo and Salsa to Afro Cuban Hip Hop. Artforms created right here in the Boogie Down have since traveled across invisible borders and become the music of the world. Presented free to the public, the 2-day SBCF includes outdoor music and dance performances plus all aged art activities from May 29-30, 2026 at Father Gigante Plaza located in front of St. Athanasius Church at 878 Tiffany Street in the South Bronx. Everyone is welcome! Last year’s SBCF drew an enthusiastic audience of over 5000 people. Come dream big with us at this year’s South Bronx Culture Festival: Dream Big, Stay Rooted.

Headliners include Casita Maria’s Latin jazz ensemble
Bronx Banda with Arturo O’Farrill   &  The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra with special guests Bombazo Dance Co. & NYC Salsa Dance  + The Mambo Legends Orchestra featuring mambo dancers Suci Kurniati Frohman & Franck Muhel. Additional artists from across the diasporas of the Caribbean, Latin America and West Africa include: Berta Moreno & La Troupe (Afro-Jazz Soul Project), Kalí Rodríguez-Peña & Mélange (Latin Jazz), Maria Raquel  (Latin), Telmary (Afro-Cuban HipHop), Uptown Vinyl Supreme (DJ Collective) and the Young Artists & Teaching Artists of Casita Maria  (Showcase). Festival hosts Rhina Valentin and Javier E. Gomez  will weave the weekend together with playful banter and storytelling.

SBCF 2026, the only event of its kind in Hunts Point / Longwood, will showcase the work that we do throughout the year, teaching and inspiring young artists to dream big while staying rooted in their cultural heritage, documenting the history of the Bronx through music and dance, and nurturing partnerships with local artists and organizations as we enrich and elevate our beloved community.

Casita Maria and partnering organizations will create even more joy for children, families and the community by offering: dominoes, street games, cultural opportunities, food by Bendecida Sweets Eats and free art making activities and face painting. Partners include: Al Quiñones Art Club
presented by SPARCS, Belongó, Bloomberg Arts Institute, Bronx Arts Space, Carnegie Hall, New York Public Library, Public Theater, The Whitney Museum, and the Theater Development Fund.

This Festival would not be possible without the support and generosity of partners including SEBCO Inc., who allows us to use Father Gigante Plaza for free. This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) in partnership with the City Council and our new Council Member Justin Sanchez. Additional support is provided by the Department of Youth and Community Development, Howard Gilman Foundation, and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. This event is part of
Carnegie Hall’s United in Sound: America at 250 citywide festival

Visual Artist

Maria Luisa Portuondo Vila  is a Chilean artist whose work spans from installation to literature. Her projects normally focus on creating artistic events that emerge from the relationship between artwork, context and participants, who are regarded as co-creators of the art piece. Vila´s pieces are created from a wide range of media and they grow as her audience does. This allows her to capture people’s personal memories and weave them as micro-memories in a collective memory record. In this way, her work can be seen as a contribution to historicity, society and to an awareness of what makes “us”.  María´s work has been exhibited in Asia, Europe, and The Americas.  She currently lives and works in New York City. Founded and opened to the public in 2010 as a space for art exhibits and performances, BronxArtSpace (BAS), a 501C3 organization, is a community-based organization committed to supporting local and often under-resourced artists, fostering projects that engage vital social, educational, and political concerns. Through curating group exhibitions, offering a residency program for Bronx artists, and providing meeting space for artist-led workshops and community-based interest groups, we combine forces with similar non-profit organizations to enhance the cultural vitality of our immediate and extended neighborhood. Located in the densest concentration of public housing in the US, BAS creates programs that represent and inspire its community. BAS works to ensure that Bronx-based artists comprise at least 45% percent of exhibiting artists, and that both women and artists of color are the majority of those presented through our programming.

The Bloomberg Arts Internship (BAI) program is working to help young people develop the skills and give them the tools they need by providing students with work experience at select cultural institutions, as well as work-readiness and college-preparation training. Rising public high school seniors receive paid summer internships at cultural organizations along with supplementary activities in their city designed to develop workforce readiness skills, create a pipeline to cultural sector careers, promote engagement with the cultural sector, and prepare students to apply to and attend college.

Since it began in 2012, the program has supported over 2,250 paid internships at more than 250 cultural organizations and maintains an active alumni network. Bloomberg Arts Internship is the largest, and one of the few, programs that offers paid internships for high school students in the cultural sector in the United States. Select alumni of the summer program also participate in internships at cultural institutions during their senior year in high school and in a summer internship during college. BAI is currently operating in seven cities (Baltimore, Boston, Detroit, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C), with an expansion to Los Angeles planned for 2026.

In an attempt to fight the blight and deterioration that had plagued the Hunts Point community of the Bronx, the group known as SEBCO (South East Bronx Community Organization) was formed in the fall of 1968 under the visionary leadership of Father Louis R. Gigante. SEBCO is responsible for the development and construction of over 6,000 new or rehabilitated housing units in approximately 450 buildings throughout the South Bronx. SEBCO has grown from a small group of community activists into a sizable and sophisticated development company with over 300 employees. From modest origins, SEBCO has contributed greatly to the City of New York by providing jobs, commerce, recreational facilities and of course, housing for its low and moderate-income residents.

Education at the Whitney: For more than fifty years the Whitney has offered a rich variety of education programming.

In her 1994 book Teaching to Transgress, bell hooks states that "education [is] about the practice of freedom." The Education Department at the Whitney Museum of American Art is dedicated to engaging in that practice, and to promoting diverse voices within American art and our community. Focusing especially on those who have been historically marginalized, we place the learner at the center of our programs and resources. At the Whitney, we see museum education as an experimental process in which art serves as a catalyst for exploration, learning, and growth. The department is comprised of three key areas all working by different means towards the same goal: Public Programs, Interpretations & Research, and Social Impact
