  • Summer Camp - Group Facilitator

    POSITION SUMMARY

    For our Summer Day Camps, we are interested in Group Facilitators who will serve as a direct line staff member during programming hours. The Group Facilitator will be responsible for leading in one or more STEAM discipline areas, physical activities, or other activities that develop and strengthen academic, physical, and social skills. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing academic support, facilitating activities, and developing lessons that are aligned with our Creative Youth Development (CYD) framework. 


    The Group Facilitator will be supported by a team of education professionals including the Program Coordinator, the Associate Program Coordinator, the Education Specialist and Teaching Artists. 

     

    OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES 


    SUPPORT

    • Supervise young people during Day Camp activities and field trips; oversee their meals and snack distribution, their transitions to activities, and dismissal.
    • Create and maintain a structured safe space (classroom/studio) that supports learning, growing, and supports social-emotional well-being.
    • Log and report daily attendance, behavior, and incident reports.
    • While working with a teaching artist, appropriately support their work and encourage young people to participate and engage in the activity.
    • Perform additional duties as directed or as needed.

    DEVELOP

    • In coordination with the Education Specialist, develop engaging and age-appropriate lesson plans and instructional material for STEAM, civic engagement, physical recreation, arts & crafts, and literacy activities.
    • Develop unit outline curriculum for activities like Civic Engagement in alignment with the unit framework created by the Education Leadership Team.
    • Actively participate and attend team meetings and one-on-one sessions.
    • Build positive relationships with young people to establish positive connections and rapport.

    FACILITATE

    • Facilitate lessons in at least one or more of the following activities: STEAM, civic engagement, physical recreation, arts & crafts, and literacy activities that encourage growth and exploration.
    • Model the principles of CYD in the classroom/studios and in the workplace.

    QUALIFICATIONS/ REQUIREMENTS

    • High school diploma required; currently enrolled in college, preferably in education or youth development field.
    • A minimum of 2 years of direct experience working with children under 13 years of age.
    • The position will require you to complete a minimum of 10 hours of paid training/professional development workshops that focus on youth development, safety, mandated reporter, social-emotional learning, lesson planning, and facilitation.

    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

    • Pay range from $18.00 to $22.00 per hour.
    • Must be available to work Monday to Friday in either the 8 AM - 4 PM or 10 AM - 6 PM shift (shift will be assigned based on the needs of the program).

    About the Organization

    Casita Maria is a youth, family and community serving organization in the Hunts Point/Longwood section of the South Bronx.  We were established in East Harlem in 1934 by Claire and Elizabeth Sullivan and Sister Mary Imelda who observed waves of Spanish-speaking people pouring in from Puerto Rico and in desperate need of services. While settlement houses were in place to address the needs of the poor, this population was made up of predominantly European immigrants.  Seeing the disparity and isolation that Latinos were confronting, Claire, Elizabeth, and Sister Mary provided essential nutrition, housing, childcare, and educational support.  What they could not know at the time is that they were championing social justice for what would become one of America’s most historically marginalized groups.

    About the Position

    This is a project intensive position. The work is highly administrative, task oriented and during events labor intensive. The candidate must have exceptional organizational, communication and project management skills and be fueled by a passion for Arts, Culture and Community. An ability to find joy in the workplace is a must!


    Reporting to the Artistic Director, the Arts Program Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating logistics to prepare for the production of: the South Bronx Culture Festival, BronX BandA featuring Arturo O’Farrill concerts, exhibitions, murals, partner workshops and events, public programs plus assist with culminating events for young artists participating in Casita Maria’s after-school and summer day camp programs. The Coordinator will schedule and supervise event staff and vendors as needed. 


    The Coordinator will work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends based on Department needs and event/program schedule. Flex time will be provided to balance the workload. Event dates will be provided at the time of hire. Additional dates may be added to the calendar throughout the year. 


    The Coordinator will be supported by and collaborate with a team of professionals including the: Executive Director, Artistic Director, Director of Education and Programs, Teaching and Therapeutic Artist Coordinator, Associate Coordinator for the Teen Arts Apprentice Program, Community Outreach and Family Engagement Coordinator, Finance Department, the Department of People and Culture, event staff and vendors.


    Overall Responsibilities

    • Coordinate the logistics and production of Casita Maria’s internal and external Arts programs, booking and working with vendors, artists, event staff and partners. Help create and follow a run of show during events. Track attendance for each program. 
    • Manage the Casita Maria Gallery by maintaining the space, booking and leading visits/tours, booking and coordinating gallery vendors, organizing opening and closing celebrations, managing logistics for install and de-install. 
    • Assist with Casita Maria’s 11 piece Latin jazz ensemble BronX BandA by maintaining its music library, scheduling, and setting up/breaking down for rehearsals. 
    • Process Department invoices using Docusign and track payments in collaboration with the Finance Dept. Training will be provided by the Finance Dept. 
    • Manage Department calendars, schedule and coordinate all meetings, rehearsal dates and program-specific space usage along with associated building requirements. 
    • Train and manage seasonal staff to support Arts programming, including but not limited to: event staff, installation crews, security. 
    • Order all supplies for the Department, keep track of inventory and deliveries, assembly as needed. 
    • Assist with training and managing Teen Arts Apprentices to support the APC portfolio.
    • Attend weekly check-in meetings with the Artistic Director to review upcoming tasks and to provide updates. The balance of the work week requires the Coordinator to work through a task list to prepare the Department for events and programs both short and long term. Attend team meetings as scheduled. 
    • Manage digital archive on Box.
    • Represent Casita Maria at meetings and conferences related to Arts programs as needed.
    • Attend professional development training as needed. 
    • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

    Education and Experience Required

    • Bachelor’s degree in a related field with a strong track record of 3-5 years of program management and production experience.
    • Experience working with and supporting artists, including expertise in presenting culturally relevant and engaging visual and performing arts events in a community-based setting
    • Experience working in an office environment and in the field.
    • Experience managing multiple projects, both short and long term simultaneously.

    Generally, works weekdays 10am-6pm in an office, school, and community center environment. Early evenings and weekends will be assigned based on the event/program schedule at certain times during the year.

    Compensation and Benefits

It includes comprehensive workplace orientation and job training, leadership and service opportunities, and robust cultural enrichment activities led by world renowned NYC cultural institutions such as the Whitney Museum, The Metropolitan Opera, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Public Works of the Public Theater. 


    This dual program offers a part-time paid position and unpaid mandatory enrichment activities at no cost to the participant. We will engage young people from high school through college and invite Apprentices (high or college) to apply for summer employment either as Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) workers or part-time, seasonal staff. Following college graduation, we encourage Apprentices to apply for full time employment at Casita Maria. 


    TAAP requires young people who are prepared to learn, take on responsibilities, serve their community, and potentially become part of New York City’s vibrant cultural ecosystem, with training and support from Casita Maria’s creative youth development professionals.

    The Associate Coordinator will assist with TAAP culminating partner events including but not limited to Public Works of the Public Theater, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum. The Associate Coordinator will also assist with all Department events including but not limited to the South Bronx Culture Festival, Gallery programs, Bronx Banda featuring Arturo O’Farrill concerts, and Casita Maria Young Artists culminating events. 

    Working with the Arts team, the Associate Coordinator will train and supervise the teens during after school programs, summer day camp, and events. The Associate Coordinator will be in regular contact with and supported by a team of professionals including the Executive Director, Artistic Director, Director of Education and Programs, Teaching and Therapeutic Artist Coordinator, Arts Program Coordinator, People and Culture Manager and Community Outreach and Family Engagement Coordinator.

    Organize and host a semi-annual recruitment event to encourage new teen staff to apply.

    Organize the Family Roll Out Meetings for potential candidates and their parents/caregivers; which includes ordering food, set-up and breakdown of meeting space and confirmation of guest list.

    Oversee bilingual tutoring sessions and assist as needed. 

    Schedule interviews and assist in the selection process; notify the People and Culture  Department of any new hires.

    Co-facilitate onboarding training for TAAP with the Education Team.

    Create, manage and post weekly TAAP work schedules.

    In collaboration with the Education team, build the TAAP curriculum.

    Research, book and/or lead enrichment activities and maintain a bilingual calendar of these activities. Chaperone all off site activities including but limited to walking tours and visits to cultural institutions.

    Maintain inventory of healthy snacks and replenish by placing orders.

    Manage daily check-in meetings and TAAP placements / assignments.

    Attend bi-weekly check-in meetings with the Artistic Director and bi-weekly team meetings.

    Attend professional development trainings as assigned. 

    Oversee photo and video documentation of the program, collect testimonials and surveys as needed to assist with grant applications.

    Draft assessments for each teen and co-lead reviews with the Artistic Director.

    Update and translate flyers and information documents.

    Ensure pre and post Social Emotional Learning surveys are completed by the teen employees.

    Assist the Arts and Education teams with culminating events and public programs as assigned.

    Complete other duties as assigned by the Artistic or Education Directors.


    Education and Experience Required

    Bachelor’s degree in a related field OR 3 to 5 years with a strong track record of working with youth/teens in a community arts setting.

    Must be proficient in both English and Spanish, with the ability to read, write, speak and teach in both languages.

    Experience managing multiple projects, both short and long term simultaneously.

    Experience and comfortable working in an office environment and outdoors for events.

    Previous experience working at a community based organization strongly preferred.

  • Hip Hop Teaching Artist

    About the Organization

    Casita Maria is a youth, family and community serving organization in the Hunts Point/Longwood section of the South Bronx. We were established in East Harlem in 1934 by Claire and Elizabeth Sullivan and Sister Mary Imelda who observed waves of Spanish-speaking people pouring in from Puerto Rico and in desperate need of services. While settlement houses were in place to address the needs of the poor, this population was made up of predominantly European immigrants. Seeing the disparity and isolation that Latinos were confronting, Claire, Elizabeth, and Sister Mary provided essential nutrition, housing, childcare, and educational support. What they could not know at the time is that they were championing social justice for what would become one of America’s most historically marginalized groups.

    About the Position

    Reporting to the Artistic Director, the Hip Hop Teaching Artist will be responsible for following a Creative Youth Development framework informed by Expressive Arts and Social Emotional Learning to prepare Young Artists for high quality culminating events. This is a direct service position requiring strong teaching and group facilitation skills fueled by a passion for arts, culture and community. The Teaching Artist will be supported by a team of professionals including the Artistic Director, Teaching and Therapeutic Artist Coordinator, Group Facilitators, Education Coordinators plus the Executive Director and Director of Education and Programs.


    The Teaching Artist will promote the values such as commitment, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, creative innovation, confidence and celebration while preparing participants for culminating events, such as the: Winter Spectacular and the South Bronx Culture Festival.


    Overall Responsibilities

    • Teach young artists about and celebrate the history, cultures and communities of the South Bronx through the Arts while honoring Casita Maria’s 90 years of service to the community and our roots. 
    • Develop culturally relevant and tiered Syllabi, reflecting on Casita Maria’s identity and organized in 4-12 week modules. (The syllabi will build on artistic and life skills throughout the year to prepare young artists for high quality culminating events, auditions, higher education, and if inspired, a career in the arts).
    • Create and implement CYD Lesson Plans combining structured activities that teach technique through tiered skill building based on age and opportunities where young artists can play and explore through an expressive arts model. 
    • Submit lesson plans no less than one week in advance.
    • Collaborate with the Artistic Director, Teaching and Therapeutic Artist Coordinator when creating lesson plans and syllabi.
    • Maintain a structured classroom environment focused on active participation that is conducive to learning while being flexible to respond to the needs of the young artists each session. 
    • Maintain clear safety protocols as per the design of the program. 
    • Set up and break down the assigned Studio each session, take attendance and pick up and drop off youth at assigned location. 
    • Attend professional development trainings and required meetings as necessary plus participate in all rehearsals and culminating events as assigned. 
    • Handle all administrative aspects of the program as outlined by the Arts Department.

    Discipline

    Dance - Hip Hop (6th-8th grades)


    The Teaching Artist will teach the Hip Hop Dance Arts Club for 6th-8th grade participants at the beginner/intermediate level. All young artists will learn the history, cultural relevance, and fundamentals of Hip Hop dance. The Teaching Artist will attend rehearsals and events: Winter Spectacular and South Bronx Culture Festival.


    Qualifications/Experience Required 

    • Bachelor’s degree in Dance or a related field with a strong track record of 3-5 years of teaching young artists K-12 in an urban after-school environment. 
    • Experience creating culturally relevant syllabi and lesson plans. 
    • Expertise in presenting culturally relevant and engaging visual and performing arts events in a community-based setting.

    Requried Skills and Competencies

    • Must be outgoing and love working with Middle School youth, with a strong interest in being a role model. 
    • Ability to work collaboratively with a sense of humor, integrity, and professionalism. 
    • Strong teaching and group facilitation skills. 
    • Demonstrated experience working with young artists in 6-8th grades. 
    • Expertise in developing a hip hop dance curriculum for young artists. 
    • Experienced at guiding young artists to full-scale culminating events. 
    • Strong communication and classroom management skills are must-haves. 
    • Loves working with children and has a firm understanding of youth development. 
    • Passionate about the arts. 
    • Eager to work in a fast-paced arts and education environment with an energetic, positive and passionate team. 
    • Exceptional interpersonal skills. 
    • Must be organized, flexible and adaptable while teaching and during events. Must be able to make decisions and problem solve in the moment while maintaining composure plus provide follow up as needed. 
    • Integrity and professional discretion. 
    • Spanish language/writing skills are a plus but not mandatory.

    Work Hours, Physical Requirements, and Working Conditions

    • The TA will work during the after-school programming hours of 3PM to 6PM in an office, school, and community center environment. Summer Day Camp hours are more flexible. The number of days will range between 1-3 days a week at certain times during the year. An annual calendar will be provided. 
    • Must be able to lift a minimum of 30 pounds. 
    • Will be required to move and set up furniture/supplies/equipment in a room. 
    • Will require walking, lifting, stooping, and bending. 
    • Works in an office environment. 
    • Frequently speaks, reads, writes and uses a computer keyboard. 

    Compensation and Benefits

    The compensation range is $45 per hour with a secondary meeting rate of $30. Casita Maria offers its part-time employees participation in the following benefits; Health and Dependent Care Savings Account; Commuter Benefits; safe and sick leave; and 8 paid holidays if eligible.
