The Birth of Hip Hop

CASITA MARIA CENTER FOR ARTS & EDUCATION AND DANCING IN THE STREETS PRESENT:

THE SOUTH BRONX CULTURE TRAIL FESTIVAL: THE BIRTH OF HIP HOP
OCTOBER 2-9, 2013

This year’s SOUTH BRONX CULTURE TRAIL FESTIVAL: THE BIRTH OF HIP HOP leads us back to the beginning. The earliest days when there was DJ Kool Herc with his desire for positive social change, unrivaled sound and ingenious innovations to the break that revolutionized everything about the beats. From there, we celebrate all the B-Boys, B-Girls, DJs and MCs who followed by manipulating those beats into an extension of the body, mind and soul. We revel in the Graffiti Artists’ refusal to remain unseen and anonymous. We pay tribute to Afrika Bambaataa’s commitment to evolving and bringing Hip Hop together, while still holding the core values strong. We cherish the esteemed artists and historians who documented and preserved it for future generations. We venerate all the great Pioneers of Hip Hop, who not only changed our city but also took the entire world with them in the process.

Most of all, we stand in awe of earlier generations of Bronxites and their insuppressible spirit that transformed unfathomable socio-economic and political challenges into an unstoppable force for creation. Fortunately for us, the Bronx’s aesthetic drive is still as strong today, because THE BIRTH OF HIP HOP also brings us right back to the here and now. We treasure and make way for all of our brilliant, emerging artists, who continue to build on the monumental legacies of the past.

We hope you join us, since ultimately, this festival is about you – taking part and making it all worthwhile.
